Though other beverages like tea and soft drinks contain caffeine, coffee has the highest amount of caffeine. Usually a cup of coffee contains 100 to 150 mg of caffeine, and expresso contains 100 mg of coffee. Arabica coffee contains a lower amount of caffeine than robusta coffee. Tea and soft drinks usually contain about 50 mg per cup or glass of approximately 200 ml.

The caffeine in coffee acts as a stimulant, and the effect on the brain is maximum 30 to 60 minutes after drinking it. Most of the caffeine is usually eliminated from the body within a few hours. Many people drink several cups of coffee to keep them alert, but this often has adverse effects as it can lead to caffeine dependence.

When the daily intake of caffeine exceeds 350 mg , the person may suffer from caffeine dependence, though symptoms are seen when the intake is at lower levels also. If the caffeine intake is stopped for a day, it usually results in a splitting headache. Symptoms of a higher level of caffeine addiction are leg pains, sweating, runny nose, yawning.
